Flower and botanical studies from direct observation Flower studies in vases from direct observation
The challenge when working from life is to capture both the pose and an expressive quality. In these portraits I have strived to achieve a likeness or worked more intuitively.
Part of my practice is experimenting with materials and this leads to abstract works. These are works made with permanent markers. These works came from experiments with ink and watercolor.
Drawing is an integral part of my work. These drawings from life drawing sessions show different techniques in quickly capturing the pose of the figure. These works are in various media, including graphite, colored pencil, ink, charcoal and digital.
Landscape painting gives me the opportunity to work with shape, form, space and color. All works here are oil on canvas. These landscapes are all works on paper and most are done from direct observation.
